Another one bites the dust? One step closer to the edge? I don’t know. But I feel like I’m closer to the main event now that those four wisdom teeth are gone. I can tell that I was using my wisdom teeth to chew a little, and things are not going to be fun once I am back on more solid foods. I’m hoping that bands on my very back molars will help sort out my teeth a little, but the open bite is rearing its ugly head and chewing is problematic. I saw my will-be orthognathic surgeon for the wisdom teeth removal, and she mentioned just upper jaw again.
How long do they wait until they make a decision on that? For those of you that have Class III Malocclusions, did you have to have both? Was there ever a choice? Can upper only correct asymmetry? In terms of cost to the patient, there is a big difference in one jaw and two, and I’m still waiting to see what insurance is going to say. If they cover at least 80% of surgeon’s fees, I will be thrilled.
I wanted to document the swelling from this procedure and compare later to the actual surgery. I really didn’t well much with the wisdom teeth extractions…
Not really too bad post-wisdom teeth extractions. Minimal swelling. Hope I can say the same for jaw surgery!
Luna was my recovery buddy this weekend.
Today was the day! Expander out and top braces on. My teeth are not happy right now. Definitely a soup for lunch and a lot of coffee day to get through work when I get in. I will post some braced pictures as well later to document from now.
I noticed that the bottom teeth moved pretty fast, but I have a good sized gap on the right side. It will be interesting to see how long I have now before surgery. I do have to have my wisdom teeth taken out, so that’s my next big adventure. I feel it will be good surgery prep, as it will be with the same surgeon, I can see how my face handles the swelling, and I will have to do soft foods for awhile. I’m not sure if you have to wait a certain amount of time after wisdom teeth surgery before the jaw surgery, but I think I need it done to get my teeth moved into the correct position before surgery regardless. I guess the sooner the better!
I’m off to make a smoothie and get ready to leave for my half work day. It is nice being able to speak clearly again!
Pictures of top braces and current bite
The lower braces are causing my mouth to stick out more it appears.
Biting from the top. This one is interesting as it shows more of the crossbite going on. Not sure if that is the true crossbite or just teeth moving around to make space for one on the left.
Visited the ortho for a check-in on Monday. I’m stuck in the expander for another six weeks (at least) even though I’m not sure it 100% did what it was supposed to do. I definitely have a gap (that hasn’t closed much yet), but I think they were hoping for more expansion.
However, my bottom teeth are definitely moving! I didn’t expect things to shift quite so fast, but my underbite and crossbite are both worse. Lovely.
In addition to the visual changes, I’m starting to get more and more consistent pain in my left jaw joint. It has hurt for hours today, and I had quite a bit of popping and “crunching” going on earlier. Is this something that anyone else noticed?
I’m planning to talk with a couple of other surgeons today. I’m probably going to need upper and lower surgery, which will be fun to pay for in the good old USA. I should meet medical necessity, but I don’t have a surgeon in network. Other US jaw surgery folk: how was dealing with insurance?
I’m having a hard time smiling and even talking these days. My family, friends, and co-workers are awesome for dealing with me and my speech/eating problems. I keep telling my husband it was hard enough to eat before I had all of the hardware put in. Now, with the bite becoming work, I am choking a lot on food ?!
I wanted to share some update pics:
It looks like my openbite is also worse…

Smiling has become incredibly awkward…
